Medical Topic of the day:
Today's Topic:  I got another request to do!  This topic was requested by my good friend Jenn.  She writes:  "Duda, what is Münchausen syndrome by proxy?  I hear a lot about it in my line of work and I want to know if it can be treated with succinylcholine?*"  So we will explore this and many other questions in today's entry.

It's what's for dinner!

Off the top of my head:  I know it is a medical disorder where people make shit up in order to attract attention to themselves or guilt people into dependency issues.  By proxy suggests someone else would be doing that for you.

My research today:  Officially Münchhausen syndrome is a disorder in which a person has a propensity to fabricate or exaggerate medical conditions in order to attract attention to themselves.  Münchausen by proxy syndrome (Hereby known as MBPS) is a relatively rare from of abuse where a parent or caretaker fabricates or exaggerates medical symptoms of a someone in their care and may also involve intentional injury or harm to that person to create actual medical symptoms or illness.  The DSM-IV-TR classifies Münchausen Syndrome as a "factitious disorder" which is a lump category of psychiatric disorders and does not classify individual disorders separately in this category.

MBPS is more common in children of preschool age but there are cases of people of all ages.  Many times the person with the disorder will have some sort of medical background or training and will know specifically what questions a pediatrician or doctor may ask and how to answer them.  Besides increasing attention to themselves or their child, a person with MBPS may also get some sort of sick satisfaction from knowingly deceiving a medical professional that they consider superior to themselves.

Since the disorder is psychiatric the causes vary but typically stem from a traumatic or abusive upbringing or a previous encounter with this syndrome at a young age.  Children with sick siblings or companions may notice the attention received and develop an issue with attention seeking behavior later in life that could manifest as MBPS when they have children of their own.

Treatment typically involves protecting the child or person affected and removing them from the abusers care.  MBPS patients require extensive counseling and psychiatric treatment typically with hospitalization. I personally recommend electroshock therapy to the genitals.

To answer your question about succinylcholine the answer is of course!  Succinylcholine works for everything!  Hah hah, seriously though, no.  Thanks for the question Jen!

Münchausen Syndrome is named after Baron von Münchausen an 18th century German dignitary known for telling wild, fictitious stories.  He once claimed to have rode a cannon ball into battle.  If you've seen a fellow with a funny 18th century hat on a joker in a deck of cards it's probably him.
